Open Data Playground (ODP), in collaboration with TELT, Lazio Innova, Palantir, Fourth Age, AWorld and ZeroCO2, is pleased to announce the Alpine Climate Data Challenge 2025, a European Hackathon focused on the use of machine learning and data visualization, to develop solutions capable of mitigating the impact of climate change on the Western Alps, particularly between the Susa Valley in Italy and the Maurienne Valley in France, concerned by the new Lyon-Turin railway line.
The Alpine Climate Data Challenge, presented on 30 July at Casa Italia during the Paris Olympics, on the occasion of the first meeting of the Lyon Turin Engagement Forum, is open to university and doctoral students from universities throughout Europe and will take place from 21 to 24 February 2025.
Putting their skills to the test, participants will be asked to use open data to create predictive models and propose novel visualisations and interpretations that can help manage the effects of climate change, also with a view to the 2030 Winter Olympics. The finalist teams will present their solutions in a pitch competition during the final event in Turin, on 14 March 2025.
The university and doctoral students must form teams of four people. They can also register individually and, with the support of the ODP and a dedicated Discord server, be put in touch with others to form teams. During the competition, teams will have access to ODP’s Foundry Palantir environment, which will allow them to manage the entire project, from data integration to visualisation and the development of innovative solutions using Generative AI.
The number of teams admitted is limited to 40, so it is advisable to register as soon as possible. Participation is completely free of charge. All participants must complete registration on Ticket Tailor by 15 January 2025. Starting in October, several workshops will be organised at Italian and French universities to present the project and the scope of analysis. In the four weeks leading up to the event, online training will be provided to prepare for the hackathon and the use of Palantir Foundry.
