The main Lyon-Turin Italian construction site, serving as the gateway to the base tunnel works in Italy.
The Italian section of the base tunnel will be excavated from the Chiomonte construction site to Susa. A total of approximately 30 km of tunnels will be built, using either conventional or mechanized excavation methods depending on the geological conditions of each sector. The works include the two tubes of the base tunnel, the Maddalena 2 gallery, the cross-passages, the underground safety site at Clarea, and the cut-and-cover tunnel at the eastern portal of Susa.
Between Clarea and Susa, excavation will be carried out using two dual-mode Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), capable of adapting their excavation mode to the ground conditions encountered along the route.

TELT awarded the one-billion-euro work contract to the UXT group of companies composed of Itinera (group head), Ghella and Spie Batignolles. The project management was awarded to the group of companies, composed of Italferr, Systra Italia and Pini Group SA.
Completed works
The Maddalena exploratory tunnel (7,020 m), excavated between 2012 and 2017 using the GEA tunnel boring machine, made it possible to investigate the Ambin Massif and collect the geological, hydrogeological and geomechanical data required to design the base tunnel, where rock cover exceeds 2,000 metres in some sections. Fitted out with logistical niches between 2019 and 2023, it now serves as an operational access route for the construction of the main tunnel. Once the works are completed, it will be used as a service, safety and ventilation tunnel.
