The site

Located at the northern entrance to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, this site of approximately 4 ha, divided by the departmental road, consists of hay meadows and their shrubby margins. These meadows are situated on a flat area enclosed to the north by the Arc River and the wastewater treatment plant, to the east by the railway line, to the south by the town of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, and to the west by the mountain slope housing the Sainte-Thècle cave.

Key issues

This site consists of the few remaining hay meadows still being managed in the municipality of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. The compensation measure ensures the long-term continuation of mowing practices that are respectful of the biodiversity of these meadows. Scrub encroachment may also threaten the bird species and flora that use the site, promote the arrival of invasive species, etc. Finally, a protected plant species, the drooping star-of-Bethlehem, is present along the departmental road: the conservation of this species depends on appropriate management of the roadside verges.
